Located 60 miles from Goose Bay, Mercier Lake Lodge is surrounded by high hills and thick boreal forest and can only be accessed by floatplane. The lodge is built near the famed Mealy Mountains and is part of a massive watershed that drains from literally hundreds of lakes that eventually flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Mercier Lake Lodge was built in 1994 by Mick Emmens who also ran two other famed fishing lodges in Labrador. This small but comfortable lodge was created to provide groups of anglers with unparalleled access to exceptional fishing for Brook Trout, Northern Pike and Lake Trout. Mercier Lake is noteworthy because it is the only waters below the Churchill River that contains Lake Trout. The lodge was purchased by Colin McKeown in 2021 from Mick who retired and moved to Nova Scotia with his wife.
Mercier Lake and its surrounding waters offer anglers an opportunity to catch true Labrador trophy Brook Trout. The Brook Trout are beautifully coloured all season and are very heavy and fat for their length. A typical 20–21-inch Brookie will weigh 4-5 pounds, most fish usually averaging 17 to 21 inches in length. But there are many that are 23 to 27 inches caught and released each year which weigh 7 to 8 pounds. The record Brook Trout caught and weighed at Mercier Lake Lodge was 10 ½ pounds.
Since the purchase of Mercier Lake Lodge, it has undergone numerous upgrades and improvements. Freighter canoes fitted with new Yamaha outboard motors now offer better access to rivers and streams that run into Mercier Lake. Over the next few years, we are planning many upgrades including switching from generators to solar power, installing a new docking system and building “spike camps” to offer Atlantic Salmon fishing to our guests.
*Of Special Note: Mercier Lake Lodge is a total catch & release fishery. We wish to have a minimal impact on the Brook Trout population in order to preserve it in its natural state. That is why the fishing is so good! Please don’t ask if you can keep a fish for dinner…the answer will be a definitive NO!
